OREO

2021-2025

The OREO (Understanding plastic material flows, policy frameworks and value chain developments for Optimal REcycling technOlogy mixes) project is funded by the external page JONAS Network. The overarching objective of OREO is to understand the potential of emerging recycling technologies, such as chemical and solvent-based recycling, to complement established mechanical recycling approaches and thereby enhance the overall circularity of plastic materials in Europe.

To achieve this, OREO combines value chain & stakeholder analysis, policy analysis, expert interviews, and technology performance assessment to build a comprehensive understanding of opportunities and barriers across sectors. This integrative approach is applied to two key sectors: automotive and building insulation. By analyzing these sectors, OREO identifies how different recycling technologies can be strategically deployed to support higher circularity and inform policy and investment decisions.

The universities and research organizations participating in the JONAS Network are the I.S.I.S. Institute at Strasbourg University, Freiburg University, and ETH Zurich. The Network aims to bridge advanced scientific insights with industrial needs and policy priorities, reinforcing Europe’s technological leadership in sustainable materials.
