SAFOCHAIN investigates how plastics and associated chemicals contribute to food loss, waste, and safety risks across food value chains, with a focus on the trade-offs introduced by circular economy practices. Using a systems-based, multi-method approach -- including literature reviews, meta-analyses, stakeholder interviews, cross-regional case studies, qualitative modeling, and participatory workshops -- the project develops a decision-support framework to help policymakers and practitioners balance circularity, food safety, and food loss and waste reduction in future food systems.
